I was quite humbled to be awarded the 2013 Australia Day Environmental Award – Gold Coast for my work at the Gold Coast Regional Botanic Gardens for 15 years. In reality the award is not mine alone. I might be the individual who has never given up in their pursuit of a Botanic Garden on the Gold Coast, but the gardens would not have reached their current stage of development without the amazing effort of The Friends of the Gold Coast Regional Botanic Gardens.
This year the Gardens celebrate 10 years since the first plantings and in that time we have worked together to create a regional collection of plants displayed in plant communities. A walk along over 1,7km of pathway through a wonderful regional collection displayed in a garden setting introduces visitors to some of the wealth of plants native to the South East corner of Queensland, the Gold Coast in particular. The Gardens are a testament to the commitment of an amazing community effort.
In July a special event will be held at the Gardens to celebrate 10 years of planting and 15 years of planning! Watch the Friends and Councils websites for information and come and join the party!
